About the host site
Iowa is located in the heartland of the United States. It is bordered
on the east by the Mississippi River and on the west by the Missouri River.
Iowa's 2.9 million residents are some of the friendliest in the nation.
Visitors to Iowa are often sur prised by the variety of ways they can enjoy
this lovely midwestern state. Historical sites and museums are almost as
common as corn fields in Iowa. Iowa combines both the old and the new, from
the modern office buildings and amusement parks in Des Moines, the state
capital, to the Loess Hills in western Iowa.
Ames, Iowa, was established in 1864 and is located in the midsection
of Iowa. The population of Ames is 48,000. The city is a university community
with over 1,000 businesses combining resources with Iowa State University.
It is easily accessed by transcontinental US Highways 30 and 69, as well
as Interstate 35.
The Des Moines International Airport is located 45 minutes south
of Ames and is served by major commercial airlines.
Iowa State University, located in Ames, Iowa, is one of the nation's
oldest and most respected land-grant universities. Iowa State has developed
nationally recognized programs in the physical sciences and engineering,
and has emerged as an interna tional leader in the field of materials science,
due in large part to the establishment of the Ames Laboratory of the U.S.
Department of Energy on the ISU campus. The electronic digital computer,
one of the most important technological innovations of the 20th century,
was invented at Iowa State in the late 1930s by John Vincent Atanasoff.
